Gaza has always been more than the images through which the world is taught to see it.

Filmed several years before October 2023, Gaza offers an intimate portrait of everyday life in the Strip. Through young people, families, fishermen, musicians, medical workers and others, the film reveals a society living, loving, working and creating under blockade and recurring violence.

Directed by Irish filmmakers Garry Keane and Andrew McConnell, the documentary moves beyond familiar news images to centre the people of Gaza themselves—their humour, relationships, ambitions and determination to build meaningful lives despite the restrictions surrounding them.

At Casa Palestina, we screen Gaza as part of our October programme exploring the history, life and memory of Gaza before and after 7 October 2023.

This is not only a film about survival. It is a film about a people who continue to dream, create and insist on life.

In Arabic, Juzur (جذور) means roots: what grounds us, where we come from, the memories, places, and relationships that become part of who we are.

Jusur (جسور) means bridges: what connects us across distance, difference and rupture.

Gaza has left many of us carrying things that are hard to put into words: grief, anger, helplessness, tenderness, memory, solidarity, or feelings we can’t yet name. Juzur / Jusur is an intimate, held creative space where some of what we carry can take form, and where we might find we are not holding it alone.

Juzur wa Jusur is an invitation to give some of this experience space and form.

Over three sessions we work with clay, drawing and mixed media, letting texture, weight and shape become ways of expressing what words can’t always reach. We move gently from what grounds us, to giving some of it form in clay, toward connection and what helps us carry on.

No artistic experience is needed. You’ll never be asked to share personal experiences or explain your work. This is not therapy; it’s a creative, reflective space held with care for choice, boundaries, and emotional safety by Aida Akoury @fluidartwellness.pt, a Lebanese psychologist trained in art therapy.

An Alchemical Storytelling Lab with Fuad Halwani

A story can begin with an image that stays with us, a song that awakens a memory, or a sentence we cannot quite let go of.

Join Lebanese screenwriter, media producer, and researcher Fuad Halwani at Casa Palestina for an eight-week exploration of storytelling, imagination, and transformation.

Working with two distinct narrative structures—the hero’s journey and kishōtenketsu (起承転結)—we will explore the elements that give stories their shape: change, character, action, scene, and act.

Bringing together alchemy and the study of narrative, each session combines discussion with creative practice, offering tools to develop your ideas, build narrative worlds, and shape your own story. The programme culminates in a sharing of participants’ final works.

1. Alchemy 101 — An introduction to alchemy and its relevance to contemporary media.

2. Story Structure — Exploring the underlying architecture of stories through a dialectical approach.

3. New Media Theory and Practice — Connecting media studies with practical creative applications.

4. Characters as Vessels — Exploring depth psychology and character development.

5. Editing and Writing — Experimenting with visual writing through erasure, omission, and exclusion.

6. Transmedia Storyworlds — Discovering how stories unfold across different media and imagined worlds.

7. Practice as Resistance — Reflecting on creative labour and resistance through contemporary media art.

8. Sharing Works — Presenting participants’ final works, exchanging feedback, and closing the lab together.

About Fuad Halwani

Fuad Halwani is a Lebanese screenwriter, media producer, researcher, and teacher at ULHT in Lisbon, with more than ten years of experience in the media sector.

Between 2009 and 2017, he worked as a secondary-school media and theatre teacher and as a scriptwriter at Cinemoz in Beirut. In 2019, he completed the Erasmus+ MA in Screenwriting through KinoEyes, completing a published dissertation and producing the short film BRUXA.

Since 2020, his work has spanned media development, writing, production, and editing, alongside participation in pan-Arab writing seminars, including MEMI.

Through his Tawūs project, Fuad’s artistic research and practice explore the Jungian concept of “the shadow” in contemporary media, examining narrative, protocols, and aesthetics.

What does it mean to inherit the memory of a homeland and to search through history for the forces that took it away?

Casa Palestina welcomes Palestinian-British author and award-winning film producer Hanan Kattan for a conversation about her new book, Palestine Revealed.

Beginning with her grandmother’s key to the family home in Jerusalem, the book traces the systematic dispossession of the Palestinian people from the emergence of political Zionism in the late nineteenth century to the ongoing Nakba and the devastation of Gaza today.

Moving between personal memory and political history, Hanan examines the ideologies, institutions and international interests that have shaped Palestine’s story. She asks how displacement was enabled, how dominant narratives were constructed and why Palestinian voices continue to be silenced.

The evening will include a conversation with Hanan, followed by audience questions and reflections.

Hanan Kattan is a Palestinian-British author, award-winning film producer and the founder of The Enlightenment Podcast, which brings together leading voices in conversations about Palestine.

Born into a Palestinian family from Jerusalem and Bethlehem, Hanan’s connection to Palestine is deeply personal. Her mother survived the Nakba and was forcibly displaced from West Jerusalem in 1948—an inherited history that forms the emotional foundation of Palestine Revealed.

Hanan co-founded Enlightenment Productions with filmmaker and author Shamim Sarif. Her film work includes I Can’t Think Straight, The World Unseen, Despite the Falling Snow and Polarized. Across her writing, filmmaking, and public conversations, she explores identity, memory, justice, and the structures that shape whose stories are heard.

Tirikantam

Born from a shared connection of ancient mysticism and its musical practices, Tirikantam is a gathering of musicians who aim for transcendence by means of sound, frequency and melodies emanating from traditional elements.

Formed by three friends who met in London and very soon started to inspire each other, Tirikantam is a creation of:

• Christina Deva - Greek vocalist and musician emanating soundscapes and songs through esoteric drone folk and immersive sound rituals; she builds immersive soundscapes of layered voice and drone with intentions to unleash unfiltered emotions

• Rocha of Cynthia - Portuguese/Angolan multi-instrumentalist engaged in the spirit of the ancient Celts, ancient Iberia, Armenia and Persia, channeling it all into a new approach of the Portuguese guitar and a newfound love for the kamancheh.

• Lauren Laroth - English/Scottish singer, musician and dancer, fully immersed in the essence of the ancient mystics and the forgotten female voice as one of the primary sources of healing and human connection to nature, which she channels and releases in the form of chants and emotional melodies.

A unique perspective and expression of folk and ceremonial music aimed to gather people all together in a harmonious sonic journey.

Mohamed Harb is an artist, filmmaker and Gaza native, Mohamed Harb reflects the stories of Gaza through the visual arts. Since 2003, he has served as a member of the Palestinian Association of Fine Artists and works as an artist and filmmaker at the Palestinian Space Channel in Gaza.

To promote his art, he has participated in many local, regional and international held in Europe and the Arab world. Harb had witnessed many challenging events in Gaza including the uprising, blockade, and war and he still lives under the harsh conditions in Gaza. His art is influenced by the grey reality of the Palestinian issue which he tries to characterize by colors. Nevertheless, all of his work investigates the hidden human body.

He has produced many art exhibitions and workshops as well as long and short films locally and internationally. He took part in the “Cannes International Film Festival” within the Palestinian pavilion of the film Repatriation Room 2019. The film was nominated for the Robert Bosch International Prize in Germany as “Best Documentary Project on Human Rights. Harb has been recognized through many local and international awards and several grants for his innovative work not only in project implementation, but also for the use of IT and video techniques.

Over the past three years he has been working on several projects including the artistic (A Biography of Gaza) one of which has recently been screened in many projects Arab and European cities.

Written and directed by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, Palestine 36 follows Yusuf as he moves between his rural village and the growing unrest of Jerusalem. Across Palestine, resistance is rising against British rule, dispossession and the expanding Zionist settlement project. As repression intensifies, ordinary people must decide what they are willing to risk for freedom.

Blending dramatic storytelling with restored archival footage, the film brings to life a defining chapter of Palestinian history: the Great Palestinian Revolt of 1936–1939. Through its villages, families, workers and revolutionaries, Palestine 36 reveals a society already resisting the forces that would shape the Nakba and continue to mark Palestinian life today.

Featuring Hiam Abbass, Saleh Bakri, Yasmine Al Massri, Kamel El Basha and Jeremy Irons, the film offers a powerful reminder that Palestinian history did not begin in 1948—or on 7 October 2023.

Salwa Jaradat is a Palestinian vocalist, composer, and music researcher based between Paris and Beirut. Trained at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music and Antonine University in Lebanon, her work spans vocal performance, archival research, and contemporary Arab music. Her artistic practice explores the intersections of memory, breath, and feminist narratives within Arab musical heritage.

She previously performed with the ASIL Ensemble for Contemporary Classical Arabic Music and taught singing with Action for Hope, supporting Syrian and Palestinian refugee communities. During her four years at the AMAR Foundation for Arab Music Archiving and Research, she studied pioneering Arab women singers—a research journey that later evolved into two acclaimed performance projects in Beirut.

Salwa has performed at international festivals, including the Babylon Festival in Iraq, Oasis Bizz’Art in France, and Sound Disobedience in Slovenia.

In March 2026, she released her debut album, Nafas, a contemporary musical project inspired by the writings and spiritual practices of Arab women mystics.

On September 26, Casa Palestina welcomes Baltazar Molina for an intimate live performance exploring the meeting points between musical traditions, improvisation, and sound experimentation. A musician and facilitator with a distinctive approach to composition and performance, Baltazar moves freely between diverse musical languages and techniques. His work is deeply inspired by the music of the Middle East, while remaining rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and the possibilities that emerge when different sonic worlds meet. Since 1998, he has performed and collaborated across an extensive range of projects, developing an eclectic body of work shaped by years of travel, exchange, and musical exploration. His performances have taken him across Portugal and throughout Europe, as well as to Mexico, Chile, Canada, Cabo Verde, Greece, and Morocco. For this evening at Casa Palestina, we gather for a live set that moves between tradition and experimentation, familiarity and discovery.

Film screening + conversation with Saleem Haddad

An evening dedicated to the life and legacy of Edward Said, beginning with a screening of the BBC documentary Exile: Edward Said, followed by a conversation with writer Saleem Haddad.

Taking Said’s memoir, Out of Place, as a starting point, the discussion will explore some of the questions that shaped both his life and his wider body of work: exile, displacement, class, family, language, illness, memory, and the feeling of never fully belonging anywhere.

Said began writing Out of Place after receiving a serious medical diagnosis, turning back toward the world of his childhood across Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt, a world shaped by movement, rupture, exile, and the knowledge that much of what he remembered could no longer be recovered.

Through the documentary and conversation, the evening will consider how Said wrote about home from a position of displacement, how memory becomes a way of preserving places that have been lost or transformed, and what it means to live between languages, histories, and identities.

More than a discussion of one memoir, the evening will reflect on Said’s enduring intellectual and political legacy, and on the questions of home, belonging, and exile that continue to resonate across Palestinian life today.

Through the eyes of two Palestinian children, a portrait of memory, exile, and everyday life in Shatila refugee camp.

As we remember the Sabra and Shatila massacre of 16–18 September 1982, we turn not only to the violence of those days, but to the lives and communities that continued in their aftermath.

For many people around the world, the name Shatila became inseparable from the massacre of 1982. But Shatila is also a place of family, childhood, memory, and generations of Palestinian displacement.

Filmed in the late 1990s, Children of Shatila follows Farah, 11, and Issa, 12, two Palestinian children growing up in the Shatila refugee camp in Beirut. Fifty years after their grandparents were forced into exile from Palestine, they are navigating what it means to grow up as refugees in a camp shaped by massacre, siege, poverty, and displacement.

Director Mai Masri gives Farah and Issa video cameras, allowing them to document Shatila through their own eyes. Through their memories, friendships, daily lives, and hopes for the future, the film offers an intimate portrait of a generation born into exile, carrying the memory of a homeland they have never known.

Whether you are learning Arabic for work, travel, everyday life, connection to culture, or simply because you have always wanted to learn, this course will give you a strong foundation in reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversation.

No previous knowledge of Arabic is required.

Remembering Sabra and Shatila through The Valley of Tears.

This September, Casa Palestina will screen The Valley of Tears to mark the anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila massacre of 16–18 September 1982.

Directed by Lebanese-Canadian filmmaker Maryanne Zéhil, the film follows Marie, a Montreal publisher who begins receiving the written testimony of Ali, a young Palestinian who grew up in a refugee camp in Lebanon. As she searches for the person behind the story, she is drawn from Montreal to Lebanon and into the memory of Sabra and Shatila.

Moving between the personal and the political, The Valley of Tears explores testimony, trauma, exile, and the ways histories of violence continue to live across generations.

More than four decades later, we gather at Casa Palestina to remember — and to consider the role of testimony in preserving memory and resisting erasure.

A conversation on Amílcar Cabral, Palestine, culture, colonialism, memory, solidarity, and the ongoing work of liberation.

On September 12, the anniversary of Amílcar Cabral’s birth, Casa Palestina brings together Palestinian, Portuguese, and Lusophone voices for a conversation on culture, colonialism, memory, and liberation.

One of the most influential anti-colonial thinkers of the 20th century, Cabral understood culture not as something separate from political struggle, but as a fundamental part of resistance and collective liberation. His work continues to resonate far beyond Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde, raising urgent questions around land, identity, political education, international solidarity, and the role of culture in confronting colonial power.

Bringing Cabral’s ideas into conversation with Palestine, this panel will explore how culture can preserve memory, sustain identity, challenge dominant narratives, and become a space of resistance. Rather than equating distinct histories and experiences, the discussion will create space for exchange between different struggles against colonialism, asking what these histories can teach us about solidarity and the ongoing work of liberation today.

Speakers

José Manuel Viegas Neves
José is a Portuguese historian and Assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH) in Lisbon, where he also serves as Deputy Director. His research explores the intersections of culture, ideology, politics, and identity in contemporary Portugal, with a particular focus on nationalism, political ideologies, post-colonial movements, and the history and sociology of sport.

Balolas Carvalho
Balolas is a Portuguese journalist, documentary filmmaker, and producer working at the intersection of human rights, international affairs, and decolonial movements. As a cultural agitator, her work is dedicated to telling stories and creating spaces that resist, remember, and reimagine.

Wael Zboun
Wael is a Palestinian political researcher, writer, consultant, and PhD researcher in Political Science and International Relations at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. His research focuses on European foreign policy, Palestine, international law, and the relationship between normative principles and geopolitical interests, with particular attention to EU policy toward the Palestinian territories since October 7, 2023. His interdisciplinary work examines political power, international legitimacy, settler colonialism, state recognition, and the gap between political commitments and practice.

Moderator

Inês Margarida Alves

Inês studied Philosophy and writes poetry. She is currently developing a research project that draws on her own biography while exploring questions of language, family memory, identity, and Cape Verdean heritage. Through writing and artistic and cultural research, the project examines the relationships between belonging, diaspora, and ancestry, while creating new spaces for reflection on the stories we inherit and the ways we tell them to ourselves.

The 3-session course introduces participants to tatreez, Palestinian embroidery, exploring its cultural history & its practical application

This three-session course introduces participants to tatreez, Palestinian embroidery, exploring its cultural history alongside its practical application.

Participants will first learn the foundations of tatreez and basic stitching techniques, before learning how to apply tatreez directly onto clothing and textiles. The course concludes with a Tatreez Circle, where participants can continue their projects, ask questions and receive guidance.

No previous embroidery experience is required. All embroidery materials are provided, except for the clothing or textile participants choose to embroider.

Session 1: Introduction to Tatreez

An introduction to Palestinian embroidery, its history, motifs and techniques.

Participants will:

• Learn about the history and cultural significance of tatreez

• Learn the basic cross-stitch technique

• Begin stitching their own tatreez motif on an Aida fabric

Participants will leave the session with a foundation in cross-stitch and the basic skills needed to continue practicing tatreez.

Materials provided: embroidery thread, needles, Aida fabric, patterns and all necessary stitching materials.

Session 2: Tatreez on Clothing and Textiles

Participants will learn how to take tatreez beyond embroidery cloth and apply it directly to clothing and everyday textiles.

Each participant will bring an item they would like to embroider, such as a tote bag, T-shirt, shirt, or other suitable textile.

The session will cover:

• Preparing ordinary fabric for counted cross-stitch

• Using waste canvas to stitch tatreez onto clothing

• Starting and securing the embroidery

Each participant will begin their own personalized tatreez project during the session.

Materials provided: embroidery thread, needles, patterns, waste canvas, and other necessary embroidery supplies.

Participants bring: one garment, tote bag or textile they would like to embroider.

Session 3: Tatreez Circle

The final session takes the form of a relaxed communal stitching circle.

Participants return with the projects they began during the course and spend the session stitching together, with guidance available throughout.

The Tatreez Circle provides an opportunity to:

• Continue or finish individual projects

• Ask questions and receive individual guidance

• Experience embroidery as a communal practice

The session reflects the social nature of tatreez: not only as a technique, but as a practice traditionally shared through making, conversation, and time spent together.

About the Facilitator:

Aliya Beyhum is a curatorial researcher specializing in Arab heritage and material culture. She has worked closely with Arab dress and textiles, and holds an MPhil in Heritage Studies from the University of Cambridge, where her dissertation explored the relationship between tatreez and Palestinian national identity. Aliya is also a tatreez practitioner, and her workshops blend practical embroidery techniques with the stories, traditions, and meanings behind tatreez

Thirty-three years after the signing of the Oslo Accords, what did they actually change, not only in the relationship between Israel and the Palestinians, but within the Palestinian liberation movement itself?

To mark 33 years since Oslo, Casa Palestina welcomes Hazem Jamjoum for a talk tracing the political processes that led to the agreements between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the State of Israel, and examining their lasting consequences for Palestine.

The evening will look beyond the familiar narrative of Oslo as a failed “peace process” to consider the agreements within the longer history of Zionist settler colonization and Palestinian struggle.

Hazem will explore the place of Palestinian self-government and statehood within Israeli colonial strategy, as well as the debates around statehood within the Palestinian liberation movement itself.

The talk will consider the transformation of the PLO, the establishment of the Palestinian Authority, and the political structures produced through Oslo — asking what these changes meant for Palestinian representation, refugees, liberation and the fragmentation of the Palestinian people.

More than three decades later, as Palestinians continue to confront dispossession, colonization and Israel’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people, the evening asks what it means to understand Oslo not simply as an agreement of the past, but as a political framework whose consequences remain deeply present.

A discussion with the audience will follow the talk.

About Hazem Jamjoum

Hazem Jamjoum is a Palestinian educator based in London.

He is the founder and lead editor of Safarjal Press safarjal is Arabic for quince, a radical publishing house focused on translating socially engaged texts to and from the Arabic language.

He is an award-winning translator into English of Ghassan Kanafani’s The Revolution of 1936–1939 in Palestine and Maya Abu Al-Hayyat’s novel No One Knows Their Blood Type.

In August 2025, he curated the London exhibition Room 14: Artwork from the Palestinian Prisoners Movement, which brought together prison abolitionist and prisoner-support organizers around artworks smuggled out of Ofer military prison in Palestine.

Hazem has lectured and led popular education workshops on subjects including the history of the Palestinian struggle, radical archiving, Indigenous sovereignty, prison abolition, border justice, the politics of food, cultural production, and the political economy of empire and imperialism.

The Theremin Woman” (2026) is the debut Ambient and Experimental music release of the multi-instrumentalist live performer Sara Wual.

Divided in two volumes, the deep, nostalgic and slightly psychadelic LP will be interpreted live with machines at Casa Palestina. This concert on July 31st marks the official launch of the album’s Vol. II on all platforms (except Spotify for clear, stated reasons).

Join us for the first Casa Palestina Book Club, an intimate evening of collective reading, reflection, and conversation.

We’re very happy to launch the Casa Palestina Book Club, a new intimate reading and discussion space hosted at Casa Palestina in Lisbon and curated by the MAQAM team.

The book club brings readers together around books from across the region and its diasporas, creating space for collective reading, reflection, and conversation.

For our first session, facilitated by Nur Turkmani, we will be reading I Can Imagine It For Us by Mai Serhan. The book is a memoir that moves across Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, the UAE, and China. We have chosen it as a starting point for a conversation around memory, family, place, inheritance, and the intimate ways we imagine ourselves and each other across distance.

The session will include a short introduction to the book and writer, followed by collective reading and open discussion. Together, we will move through selected passages, share reflections, and introduce the wider spirit of the book club.

Casa Palestina opens its doors, an invitation to the community to come and discover the space. Drift through the house, spend the day with us, taste Palestinian flavors, and along the way, discover artisans offering pieces to take home, clothing, jewelry, and other carefully crafted goods. Linger a little longer than planned.

Experience an intimate live performance where Algerian folk, soul, and contemporary sounds come together.

BINUBIN, the project of Algerian singer-songwriter Samy Zeghmati, weaves traditional Algerian melodies with contemporary folk and soul. His music explores themes of migration, identity, and life lived “bin u bin” between cultures, places, and experiences.

Through original compositions and heartfelt reinterpretations of beloved artists such as Souad Massi and Labess, BINUBIN creates a space where memory, longing, and rhythm meet.

For this special evening, Samy will also be joined by fellow musicians and friends for an improvised jam session, celebrating connection, spontaneity, and shared musical journeys.

Juan Ferracioli mix Brazilian sonority with psychedelic experimentation, placing the viola caipira (a traditional ten-string Brazilian instrument) at the center of his sound.
He bridges tradition and innovation, offering a fresh take on the instrument without straying from its roots. In his original work, he draws on fragments of Brazil’s countryside, narrating rural odysseys in a voice all his own.
